Go west — Westhill property round-up

Stand on the site 50 years ago of what we now know as Westhill, and things would look very different indeed.

The popular town we’re familiar with today was the brainchild of a local solicitor with a vision of transforming farming land into a satellite town of the granite city.

Fast forward five decades, and Westhill is known throughout the world as a hub for oil and gas engineering expertise, and it even claims its own Olympic gold medallist — Tim Baillie, who won the men's slalom canoeing at London 2012.

Importantly too, it’s ideal for families.

There are three primary schools, and one academy. There’s also a swimming pool, community centre, golf club and fitness centre. It’s close to stunning Scottish countryside as well as a host of National Trust for Scotland properties including Castle Fraser and Drum Castle.

Other amenities include doctor and dental surgeries and supermarkets, as well as independent stores and great places to eat and drink. Plus, the town hosts its own farmers market on the first Saturday of each month.

It’s easy to get around too. Westhill’s around seven miles from Aberdeen; there’s a regular bus service into the city; and it’s only minutes from the new A90, so you can hop on and head south to Stonehaven or north to Dyce and beyond really easily.

Naomi Fraser, a PA in Ledingham Chalmers’ private client department, has lived in the town for the past 14 years. She said: “Westhill really is a great, friendly community, and it’s very family orientated. The shopping centre’s a hub that brings people together for events like the switching on of the Christmas tree lights every year, and it’s a good place to catch up with friends over a coffee or something to eat.

“The farmers market every month seems to be popular too, and there’s always plenty going on in the community centre and at the swimming pool.”
