Employment law masterclass for Lochaber pupils

Students at Kinlochleven High School discovered more about diversity, equal opportunities and discrimination in the workplace at a special workshop held yesterday.

Employment law experts from full-service law firm Ledingham Chalmers visited the school for a session with fourth, fifth and sixth-year pupils, organised by DYW West Highland, to discuss how people, by law, ought to be treated in the workplace. They also offered advice on how to spot and deal with unfair and discriminatory conduct.

Head of employment law and partner, Kirk Tudhope, said: “With only a short while to go before they start their careers, it’s crucial the students have a clear understanding of how people should be treated in the workplace; the challenging judgment calls they may face; and how to approach things if something’s not right.

“I was thoroughly impressed by their attitude, their knowledge and their appreciation that, when it comes down to it, the only thing that should matter is a person’s ability, attitude and potential.”

The visit came after the team spoke to delegates at a Lochaber Chamber of Commerce business briefing on the latest developments in employment law, and a week before the firm hosts a free, fully-booked employment law café at its office in Inverness.

Those keen to attend can still join the waiting list.

Ledingham Chalmers has offices in Aberdeen, Inverness, Stirling and Edinburgh.
