Ledingham Chalmers to focus on challenging employment law issues at Highland events

Employers can find out how to fairly and, if necessary, robustly tackle common workplace challenges at two free sessions in Inverness over the coming weeks.

On 25 September, Ledingham Chalmers’ partner and head of employment law, Kirk Tudhope, will speak to delegates at a Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) North Scotland and Islands Branch event at the University of Highlands and Islands.

This free session, for institute members and non-members, focuses on what employers need to know about continuity of employment, which determines rights such as an employee’s minimum notice entitlement and redundancy pay. The event will also look at common pitfalls, and how to avoid them.

And a few days later, on 3 October, Mr Tudhope will present at an ICAS employment update, giving an overview of topics including IR35 and employment status, the increased risk of tribunal claims, and why disability discrimination may be the largest challenge in the workplace. He will also consider GDPR and its impact, one year on, as well as Brexit.

Mr Tudhope said: “These events are aimed at businesses of any size and will be useful for owners, managers and anyone whose role touches on HR issues. Those who come along will find out more about dealing appropriately with many of the typical, and often challenging, issues that crop up in the workplace.

“Take the example of continuity of employment, our main topic for the CIPD event. The rules determining an employee’s length of service aren’t just complicated, they can be bizarre. Welcome to a world where a week may not be a week, an employee may have more than one dismissal date and when a start date may be months or even years before the actual start date.”
