Moving to the countryside?

Sundowners on the patio. Stunning views. Firepits on summer evenings. Dining alfresco.

Gardens are great spaces for fun, relaxation and enjoyment.

Now whether, longer-term, we'll see more people keen to move out to the countryside in search of more green space remains to be seen. Regardless, here in Scotland, according to Office for National Statistics data, we’re lucky to have the largest median garden size in Great Britain at 226 square metres.

Specifically gardens in Na h-Eileanan Siar are, on average, more than 45 times as big as those in the City of London — a median of 727 square metres compared with 16.

The same data show, in Aberdeen’s west end south neighbourhood, 10% of homes don’t have a private or shared garden and the median garden size for a house is 222 square metres.

Move out towards Peterculter and that rises to 319 square metres.

Twenty-four miles out to Ythsie, near Ellon, and its 439 square metres. In Howe of Alford it’s 468 square metres and in Auchnagatt it’s an impressive 784 square metres.

And business is brisk for properties with that bit of extra space.

We listed a four-bedroom in Oldmeldum on a Thursday recently. It was under offer the following Monday. That’s by no means an isolated case.

So, if warmer weather has you thinking about a move to a place with more outdoor space, we’ve pulled together a round-up of some of what’s available in Aberdeenshire.
