It’s cancer, boss: helping employers support staff with a terminal diagnosis — Wednesday 1 November 2017

At a Highland Hospice seminar this week, alongside Andrea Sillars, the charity’s head of people and facilities, partner Kirk Tudhope will discuss the legal obligations, and the wider challenges, for businesses when an employee is faced with cancer, terminal illness, or bereavement.

The day-long event also includes presentations and discussion on the stages and responses to bereavement, the implications of people living longer, and the Carer (Scotland) Act.

Mr Tudhope, who leads the firm’s employment law team, said: “Employers must be mindful of the law when an employee is faced with such a difficult and sensitive situation. Not least because such a diagnosis brings with it obligations under the Equality Act.

“For example, businesses may have to make reasonable adjustments such as introducing flexible working arrangements, which could include allocating duties to other employees, as well as allowing the employee to work for as long as they’d like, in line with medical advice.”
